An Orisha is a spirit that reflects one of the manifestations of God in Africa's Yoruba religion. Many Orishas have found their way throughout the Americas via the Atlantic slave trade and are now expressed in practices as varied as Santeria, Candombié, Trinidad Orisha, and Oyotunji

Oba is the first wife of Chango (or Shango, the god of thunder and lightning), the Orisha of the river, and the daughter of Yemaya. The most well-known tales associated with Oba is the myth of Oba's ear, it is said Oba was tricked by one of Chango's wives (Oya or Oshun) to cut off her ear and feed it to her husband, she fled from Chango and became the river Oba, once Chango found out and was angered by her self ‘mutilation. The turbulent rapids caused by the river Oba and river Oshun symbolizes the rivalry between Chango's wives (Oba and Oshun).
